Alone Together
Alone Together is an immersive print installation supported by Arts Council England. It was made in collaboration with SPIKED, a print collective of three artists: Leonie Bradley, Jess Bugler and Prerna Chandiramani.
Alone Together is a response to the shared yet unique experience of lockdown, proposing aloneness as a spectrum from isolation to solitude. Loneliness is a painful feeling that something is missing. Whereas, aloneness, has a breadth of connotations from the joy of solitude pioneered by ‘The Picturesque Movement’ to the enforced state of isolation. Each artist responds differently to the emotions along this spectrum. Their responses are interwoven but individual: Leonie using the symbolism of keys; Jess, the theme of wooded enclosures; and, Prerna, language and folding.
The installation has toured to four venues: Centrespace, Bristol, as part of IMPACT International Printmaking Conference; Canwood Gallery and Sculpture Garden, Hereford; MAKE Southwest, Bovey Tracey, Devon; and, Oriel Môn, Anglesey, Wales, together with an exhibition of supporting artworks. At each venue, visitors were invited to choose a piece of paper (an offcut or related found material) and fold an object in response to the installation. These public responses were hung by the artists at following venue, creating a growing, ever-evolving new piece of work, echoing Alone Together.
