Simulacra
Leonie collaborated with Silverlining on the artwork for his seminal album, Simulacra. The album takes its name from Jean Baudrillard’s book Simulation and Simulacra. The album posits that reality and artifice are now so intertwined that they are indistinguishable from each other. Leonie created 2.5D artworks for the limited edition covers, featuring a folded portrait of Asad Rizvi (the artist known as Silverlining) that questions how we curate our online identities and whether we ever reveal our true selves.
Leonie and Silverlining continued their collaboration, animating Leonie’s prints for two videos: Recognitia and Observa, both tracks from the album, Simulacra. Recognitia was selected by Christiana Baumgartner for IPCNY’s New Prints.
Leonie went on to create Shadow Profile, layering linocut and wood engraving. The title refers to the use of shadow profiles by platforms such as Meta that are automatically created, without consent, for any unknown contacts when a user signs up to their services.
